Parents as Teachers

Equipping parents with the resources to prepare their child for kindergarten.

If you’re like most parents, you want the young people in your life to thrive in their growth and development. However, not all parents have the resources to ensure their child is meeting their developmental milestones.

In the U.S., six out of ten kids show up to kindergarten unprepared to learn. As their child’s first and most important teacher, parents play a crucial role in supporting school readiness. UMCH’s school readiness program called Parents as Teachers provides a proven intervention that better supports parents in promoting their child’s health, early development, and learning.

People We Serve

Parents as Teachers serves parents or caregivers of a baby, toddler or preschool-age child who are interested in their child’s development progress. In addition to wanting to help their child develop, learn and grow to realize his or her full potential, they must meet the following criteria:

Those who meet these criteria are encouraged to contact our parent educators to become enrolled in Parents as Teachers. If an interested candidate has questions, would like more information, or would like to reserve a time for us to meet with their family, they are encouraged to contact us.

Success Story

Success Story

“By enrolling in Parents as Teachers through my school district, I began receiving visits from a trained parent educator, twice a month from my son’s birth until he turned 6. As a mother, I felt empowered to have a professional that I could ask questions of and get advice from; someone I could trust with questions about my children’s development and health.”

Parents as Teachers National Participant
